How to play FreeCell

How to play

Build the columns down in alternating colours, a black 8 on a red 9. Any card can go into an empty free cell or an empty column. Drag a card or an ordered run, or tap it and then tap where it should go. Double-tap sends a card to its foundation, or else to a free cell.

Moving runs

You can move an ordered run in one go when there is room to do it one card at a time: with 4 free cells and no empty column that's 5 cards. Each empty column doubles it. Moving into an empty column counts that column out.

Tips

Free cells are precious: fill them only when it gets you closer to an ace or empties a column. An empty column is worth more than a free cell. Cards that can no longer be needed move to the foundations by themselves.

Levels

Easy deals were checked to be solvable even with only two free cells, so you have room to spare. Classic is standard FreeCell. Hard gives you only three free cells; every Hard deal was solved with three.

Questions

Is every FreeCell game solvable?

Almost. Nearly every random deal can be solved, but a few can't. Every deal here, on every level and in the daily, has first been solved by a computer, so a solution always exists.

How many cards can I move at once in FreeCell?

One more than your empty free cells, doubled for each empty column. With four free cells and no empty columns, that's five cards. Moving a run into an empty column counts that column out.

Why do some cards move to the foundation on their own?

A card moves up automatically only when no other card could ever need to be placed on it, so it can't hurt your game.

What does the hint do?

A solver looks for a way to finish from your current position and highlights the first move with a short reason. If it finds a full solution, the hint says the deal is still solvable.

What is the Hard level?

The same game with only three free cells. It needs more planning, but every Hard deal has been solved with three cells.
