How to play Mahjong solitaire

How to play

Tap or click a free tile, then a free tile with the same face to remove both. Blocked tiles are slightly dimmed. Any flower matches any flower, and any season matches any season.

Free tiles

A tile is free when no tile lies on top of it, even partly, and it has no neighbour on its left or on its right. Tiles on higher layers sit a little up and to the left.

Layouts

Pavilion is the full 144-tile board and the daily puzzle. Twin towers is a medium board of 90 tiles. Garden is a narrow 66-tile board with big tiles for phones.

Stuck?

Undo takes back a pair. Hint shows a matching pair that keeps the board clearable. If no free pairs are left, Shuffle (or Hint) re-deals the remaining tiles so they can still be cleared; it counts as a hint.

Questions

Can every Mahjong solitaire deal here be cleared?

Yes. Each deal is built backwards by placing matching pairs, so a full clearing order always exists, and that order is replayed to check the deal before you see it. Your own choices can still lead to a dead end, which is what Undo and Shuffle are for.

Which tiles match?

Tiles with the same face match. The four flowers all match each other, and so do the four seasons, even though their pictures differ.

What does the hint do?

It highlights a free matching pair. When it can, it picks a pair that keeps a way to clear the whole board. If no pairs are free, it reshuffles the remaining tiles into a layout that can be cleared.

Is there a daily Mahjong solitaire?

Yes. The daily board uses the full Pavilion layout. It is the same deal for everyone and changes at midnight UTC.

Is this the same as Mahjong?

No. Mahjong is a four-player game. This is the single-player tile matching game that uses Mahjong tiles, often called Mahjong solitaire.
