How to play Tangram
How to play
Drag the pieces from the tray onto the shape. Tap a piece to turn it 45 degrees, or use the turn buttons under the board. On a phone you can also twist a piece with two fingers. The parallelogram is the only piece that needs flipping: select it and press Flip.
How to win
Use all seven pieces, with no overlaps and nothing sticking out. Pieces snap into place when they are close, so you do not need pixel-perfect dragging.
Tips
Start with the two large triangles: they cover half the shape and usually have only a few places to go. Look for sharp corners in the silhouette, they often belong to a small triangle.
Keyboard
Press 1 to 7 or the [ and ] keys to pick a piece, arrow keys to move it (hold Shift for bigger steps), Enter to drop it, R and E to turn it and F to flip the parallelogram.
Questions
What are the seven tangram pieces?
Two large triangles, one medium triangle, two small triangles, a square and a parallelogram. Together they make a square, and every tangram shape uses all seven.
Is there only one way to make each shape?
Often there are several. Any arrangement that fills the shape exactly counts as a win, not just the one we drew.
What does the hint do?
It puts one piece into its place in a full solution and tells you which piece and where it went. If one of your pieces is in the way, it goes back to the tray.
What is the guided level?
Guided shapes show the outline of every piece inside the silhouette, so it is a matching game. It is a nice way to learn how the pieces fit together.
Why is the square so hard?
Simple shapes give you fewer clues. The square, the triangle and the letters have no obvious parts, so you have to reason about edges and corners.
