How to play Ship Hunt

How to play

Tap a cell once to mark water and again to mark a ship segment; a third tap clears it. Drag to paint several cells at once. Press and hold, or right-click, to mark water directly. Tap a row or column number once it is complete to fill the rest with water.

The rules

Place the whole fleet shown under the map. Ships are straight lines of cells, across or up and down. Ships never touch each other, not even diagonally. Each number says how many ship segments are in that row or column.

Tips

Start with rows and columns marked 0, and with the cells diagonal to any ship segment: they are always water. Then place the longest ship first, because it fits in the fewest places.

Given pieces

Some cells start filled in, marked with a small pin. A rounded end shows which way its ship continues, a round boat is a one-cell ship, and a square is the middle of a longer ship.

Questions

Does every Ship Hunt puzzle have one solution?

Yes. Every puzzle is checked by a search that confirms exactly one solution, and by a solver that reaches it by deduction alone, so you never have to guess.

What is a ship-placement logic puzzle?

A solitaire logic puzzle where a fleet of ships is hidden on a grid. Row and column numbers count the ship segments, ships never touch, and you work out where every ship is.

Can ships touch diagonally?

No. There is always at least one cell of water between two ships, also at the corners. That rule alone fills in a lot of water.

How do hints work?

A hint makes one deduction for you, fills in the cells and explains why in one sentence. If one of your marks is wrong, the hint points it out and clears it first.

Which fleet is in each size?

6×6 has a 3-long ship, two 2-long ships and three boats. 8×8 adds a 4-long ship and more of the rest. 10×10 has the full fleet of ten ships, from one 4-long ship to four one-cell boats.
