How to play Pentominoes
How to play
Drag a piece from the tray onto the board. It snaps to the grid, and a shadow shows where it will land. Tap a piece to turn it a quarter turn, and use Flip to mirror it. Drag a piece off the board, or press Tray, to take it out again.
How to win
Cover every square with the pieces you were given, without overlaps. Any arrangement that fills the board counts, there is no single answer to find.
Levels
Small, medium and large boards use 4, 6 or 8 pieces. Rectangle uses all twelve pieces on a 6×10, 5×12, 4×15 or 3×20 board, and Square is the 8×8 board with four squares missing.
Keyboard
Use [ and ] to pick a piece, arrow keys to move it over the board, Enter to place it, R to turn, F to flip and Backspace to return it to the tray.
Questions
What are pentominoes?
Shapes made of five squares joined edge to edge. There are exactly twelve of them, usually named after the letters they look like: F, I, L, N, P, T, U, V, W, X, Y and Z.
Is every board here solvable?
Yes. Every board and piece set was checked with an exact-cover solver before it went into the game, and any complete filling counts as a win.
How many ways are there to fill the 6×10 rectangle?
There are 2,339 different solutions, not counting rotations and reflections. The 3×20 rectangle is much harder: it has only two.
How does the hint work?
It searches for a complete solution that keeps every piece you have already placed, then places one more piece from it. If your pieces can no longer lead to a solution, it tells you so and points at a piece to take out.
Can I flip the pieces?
Yes. Pieces can be turned and flipped, just like real cardboard pieces.
