How to play Yukon solitaire

How to play

Build four foundations up by suit from ace to king. In the seven columns, build down in alternating colours: a red 6 on a black 7. Unlike Klondike, you can move any face-up card together with all the cards on top of it, even if they are not in order. Only a king, with whatever sits on it, can go into an empty column.

Controls

Drag a card to move it and everything above it, or tap it and then tap where it should go. Double-tap a card to send it to its foundation or to the best spot in the tableau. Cards that can never be needed again go to the foundations by themselves. With a keyboard, use the arrow keys to choose a card and Enter to pick it up and put it down.

Tips

Turning over the face-down cards is the main job, so dig into the long columns on the right early. Moving a group from the middle of a column is often the only way to reach a buried card. An empty column is only useful for a king, so free one when a king is blocking hidden cards.

Levels

Classic builds down in alternating colours. Russian builds down in the same suit, which makes it much harder: our solver finishes only about one random deal in fifteen, so every deal here was picked from those it could finish.

Questions

How is Yukon different from Klondike?

There is no stock: all 52 cards are dealt into the seven columns at the start, with five face-up cards on most of them. You can move any face-up card with all the cards on top of it, whether or not they are in sequence.

Can every Yukon game be won?

Not always. Our solver finishes about four in five random Classic deals but only one in fifteen Russian deals. Every deal on this page was first solved by the computer and the solution was replayed through the rules, so you can always win.

What goes into an empty column?

Only a king, together with any cards on top of it.

Does the hint cheat?

No. The hint only looks at the cards you can see. Once every card is face up, it asks the solver and tells you when its move keeps the game winnable.

What is Russian solitaire?

A Yukon variant where you build down in the same suit instead of alternating colours. It is one of the hardest common patience games.
