How to play Golf solitaire

How to play

Tap the bottom card of a column to play it onto the waste when it is one higher or one lower than the waste card, whatever the suit: a 6 or an 8 on a 7. You can also drag it there. When nothing fits, tap the stock to turn over a new waste card. Clear all 35 column cards to win.

Levels

In Classic an ace is low and a king is high, so a king and an ace don't go on each other: only a queen goes on a king, and only a 2 on an ace. In Relaxed the ranks wrap around, so a king and an ace go on each other.

Tips

Every column card is visible, so plan ahead: look for the longest run up and down before you play, and take from the tall columns first. Kings and aces are hard to shift in Classic, so free them when you get the chance. You only go through the stock once.

Winnable deals

Each deal comes from a bank of deals that a computer solver cleared under that level's rules, and every solution was replayed by a separate rules checker. The stock cards you have left when you finish are your score under par.

Questions

How do you play Golf solitaire?

Seven columns of five cards are dealt face up. Play the bottom card of any column onto the waste pile if it is one rank higher or lower than the waste card, regardless of suit. Turn over a stock card when you are stuck, and clear every column to win.

Why is it called Golf?

Like golf, the traditional score counts strokes: the cards left on the table when you get stuck, or minus the stock cards you still have when you clear the table. A lower score is better.

Can you play a king on an ace in Golf solitaire?

Not in Classic, where aces are low and kings are high. The Relaxed level lets the ranks wrap around, so a king and an ace go on each other.

Is every Golf deal winnable?

Far from it: many deals can't be cleared at all. Every deal here, including the daily deal, has been cleared by a solver first, so you always have a chance.

Can I go through the stock more than once?

No. In Golf you turn each stock card once, so think before you turn the next one.
