How to play Gin Rummy

How to play

Each turn, draw a card from the stock or take the top card of the discard pile, then discard one card. You can't throw back the card you just took from the pile. Sets are three or four cards of the same rank; runs are three or more cards in a row of one suit, with the ace low.

Knocking and gin

Your deadwood is the total of the cards that are not in a set or run: aces count 1, pictures 10, the rest their number. With 10 or less you may knock to end the hand. With no deadwood at all you go gin. When you knock, your opponent may lay off cards on your sets and runs.

Scoring

The knocker scores the difference in deadwood. If the defender has as little or less, that's an undercut: the defender scores the difference plus 25. Gin scores 25 plus the opponent's deadwood. First to 100 wins, with a 100-point game bonus and 25 for every hand won.

Controls

Tap the stock or the discard pile to draw. Tap a card to lift it and tap it again (or the pile) to discard, or drag it onto the pile. Your hand is sorted into melds automatically, underlined in brass. With a keyboard, use the arrow keys and Enter, and K to knock.

Questions

What is an undercut in Gin Rummy?

When you knock, your opponent lays off what they can on your melds. If their remaining deadwood is equal to or lower than yours, they undercut you and score the difference plus a 25-point bonus. You can never be undercut when you go gin.

How much deadwood can you knock with?

Ten points or less. Aces are worth 1, kings, queens and jacks 10, and other cards their number. Knocking early with a few points is often better than waiting for gin.

Can I take the discard and throw it straight back?

No. After taking the top card of the discard pile you must discard a different card. You can throw it away on a later turn.

What happens when the stock runs out?

When only two cards are left in the stock and the player who drew last doesn't knock, the hand is cancelled and dealt again.

Does the computer see my cards?

No. It knows only its own hand, the discard pile, and which discards you picked up, just as you would at a real table.
