How to play Yacht
How to play
Press Roll. Tap any dice you want to keep; held dice stay put when you roll again. After up to three rolls, tap a box on the score card to score your dice there. Each box is used once, so after twelve turns the game is over.
The score card
Ones to Sixes: the sum of the dice showing that number. Full house (three alike and a pair): the sum of all five. Four of a kind: the sum of the four alike. Little straight 1-2-3-4-5 and Big straight 2-3-4-5-6: 30 each. Choice: the sum of all dice. Yacht, five alike: 50. Dice that don't fit a box score 0 there.
Tips
There is no bonus for the top half in Yacht, so don't chase sixes at all costs. Keep Choice for a bad turn, and use Ones or the Yacht box as a place to dump a hopeless roll late in the game.
Daily game
In the daily game the dice depend only on the turn, the roll and the die's place, so everyone who makes the same choices sees the same dice. Compare your score with friends.
Questions
What is the difference between Yacht and other five-dice games?
Yacht is the older public-domain game, in print since at least 1938. It has twelve boxes and no bonuses: Full house and Four of a kind score the dice themselves, both straights score 30, and there is no three of a kind box and no bonus for the top section.
What is the highest possible Yacht score?
297: five of each number in the top half (105), Full house 6-6-6-5-5 (28), four sixes (24), both straights (60), Choice with five sixes (30) and a Yacht (50). With perfect play the average is about 167.
What does the hint do?
It works out, over all possible future rolls of fair dice, which dice to keep or which box to score so your expected final score is as high as possible, and tells you that expected score. It never looks at the dice still to come.
Does a Yacht count as a Full house?
No. A Full house needs three of one number and two of another. Five alike can be scored as Four of a kind, but only four of the dice count.
How does the daily game give everyone the same dice?
Each die's value comes from the date, the turn, the roll number and the die's place in the row. If you hold the same dice and score the same boxes as a friend, you will see exactly the same rolls.
